Tasmanian Owner Builder Responsibilities Course

Enrolments now open

On the 1st September 2013, new regulations came into force under the Building Act 2000 (as amended).

This means that anyone wanting to be an owner-builder now has to apply for registration with the Director of Building Control.

In order to register, applicants must obtain a “white card” (construction industry worksite health and safety qualification) and complete an approved Owner Builder Responsibilities Course, available through Whetstone Pty Ltd and this website.

Whetstone is the only approved Tasmanian-based provider, offering self-paced and classroom learning modes with different assessment methods (face-to face as well as by telephone/internet).

What we do

About Us

Whetstone is a Tasmanian-based company, in operation since 2006 when we started out in the basement room of a family home in Hobart. Since then our business has steadily grown, our work has expanded across the state and nation-wide on projects from small consultancies to large contract management roles.

Our expertise is based on strong technical knowledge and business management skills from backgrounds in both government and private sectors.

Much of the assignments in which we have been involved have been through word-of-mouth and more than 90% of the work done in the past 17 years has been repeat business.

Our Approach

More than 100 years combined business experience among the company’s directors of has been distilled into a few very important fundamentals that underpin our approach to doing business.

CAELsymbolEvery project involves certain changes – Whetstone has been applying the C+AEL© methodology (see fig) for change in every one of its assignments over many years, because it’s a proven approach:

  • C+AEL© emphasises the importance of CONTEXT; eg what is happening in existing and prospective markets, current structure of the enterprise workforce, what product/service capability exists and the match of financial capacity to rate of implementation.
  • The C+AEL© approach utilises a comprehensive, agreed contextual framework to focus planning for ACTION steps necessary to meet implementation targets and to facilitate commencement.
  • We encourage an iterative process of EVALUATION at key milestones and project completion to support implementation team LEARNING that in turn will feed a continuous improvement of organisational performance.

Our Services

The team at Whetstone prides itself on our practical approach with applied expertise in areas of systemic thinking, focussed planning, adaptive facilitation and tailored implementation.

Our work is enabling – everything we do adds value to the business of our clients and stakeholders – whatever field they may be in. Key assignments generally have emphasis on one or more of:

  • developing strategies
  • managing projects
  • improving performance

Many past assignments have not surprisingly involved a component of training design & delivery; an important by-product of large-scale change in organisations. Whetstone has also been involved in specific program evaluation assignments for larger organisations and complex implementation projects.
